Distribution: Western Central Pacific: Indonesia to Solomon Islands, north to Japan, south to northern Australia and Vanuatu.
Diagnosis:   Dorsal spines (total): 13-13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-12; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 10-11. More black than violet (Ref. 37816).
Biology: Found in lagoons, harbors, and coastal reefs, shallow habitats, deep sand or mud slopes with outcrops of debris or coral rubble pieces, or on rocky substrates in sheltered bays. Usually occurs in large aggregations, sometimes forming mixed aggregations with Neopomacentrus sp. Abundant around sponge-encrusted mooring buoys and their anchor lines and occurs in smaller colonies around rocks and refuse

Comments: Type locality: Sumbawa (Ref. 48636). Known from Bali (Ref. 8631, 47567). Also recorded from Maumere Bay, Komodo, Manado and vicinity, Togean and Banggai Islands; with an Indonesian distribution from Papua to Bali (Ref. 47567).
