 Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Melanostomiinae
 Max. size:  32.2 cm SL (male/unsexed)
 Environment:  bathypelagic; depth range 0 - 3000 m
 Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: Spain southward to South Africa. Western Atlantic: USA to the Gulf of Mexico (no records between 10°N to 20°S), and from southern Brazil to Argentina. Also found in the Indian and Pacific oceans.
 Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 14-17; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 21-26. Body compressed. Stem of barbel spotted with numerous patches of white luminous tissue (Ref. 37473).
 Biology:  Meso- (Ref. 4468) and bathypelagic (Ref. 58302).
 IUCN Red List Status:   (Ref. 96402)
 Threat to humans:  harmless
