 Family:  Melamphaidae (Bigscale fishes or ridgeheads)
 Max. size:  10.7 cm SL (male/unsexed)
 Environment:  bathypelagic; depth range 915 - 1647 m
 Distribution:  Southeastern Atlantic Ocean, South Africa to Western Indian Ocean, off western coast of Madagascar.
 Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 3-3; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-10; Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 8-9; Vertebrae: 25-25. This species is distinguished be having a spinulated (without gap) posterior and lower edges of praeoperculum; insertion of ventral fins in front of the vertical of posterior edge of pectoral fin insertion; upper jaw extends beyond the vertical of posterior edge of eye; soft rays of dorsal fin 10, of anal fin 8-9; gill rakers at the first arch 31; vertebrae 25; pyloric caeca 9 (Ref. 83717).
