Greek, stiphos, -eos, -oys = mass + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335).
Etymology of specific name : 
Named from the Latin alcedo, meaning kingfisher, as the metallic turquoise on the head and body and the orange around the belly of the nuptial coloured male is similar to the plumage of the kingfisher, Alcedo atthis. A noun in apposition.
