Etymology: Eugerres: Greek, eu = good, well + Latin, gerres = a kind of anchovies; cited by Plinius; mexicanus: Named for the late Dr. José Luis Castro Aguirre, who made several important contributions to our understanding of Mexican fish fauna (Ref. 93806).

A tropical, demersal species confined to freshwater environment unlike other congeners (Ref. 33568). Collected from below surface in channel with sandy-slime bottom (pH 8.0, conductivity 478 µÊS/cm, dissolved solids 242 mg/l, dissolved oxygen 6.9 mg/l, and 26°C) using a 90 cm seine net. Food fish (Ref. 93806).
