Occurs off northern Australia (rare in the Gulf of Carpentaria), south to Lancelin in Western Australia and Sydney in New South Wales (Ref. 6871). Bycatch of Japanese tuna longliners in northern Australia who retain it for its fins (Ref. 6871). Also Ref. 2334, 7300, 9997.
